Ballpark quotes are educated guesses that usually have a low range and a high range number. Ballpark quotes help get an idea of the overall budget for a project, but keep in mind that ballpark calculations are a lot like putting the cart before the horse. It’s the exact opposite of how an accurate quote is produced. The horse really needs to be in front of the cart before the system will work correctly. Remember, the cart doesn’t push the horse, the horse pulls the cart. In this comparison the design plans are the horse and need to come first in order for contractors to be able to price the construction (cart) phase. There are a lot of details that can impact the final cost of the construction cart.

For example, the planning company, sketches out a rough draft of the project and generates a proposal that is based on an actual known construction company. The stated price or price range includes all the items listed and declares any allowances that have been included.

What is an allowance?

An allowance is a budgetary number that has been included in a contract. In essence, it is an estimate within and estimate. For example; If a kitchen is being relocated to another side of the house then new cabinetry and counter tops can be estimated using an allowance technique. If the kitchen remodel is estimated at $75,000 and an allowance of $25,000 was assigned for the purchase of the cabinets that means that the cabinets are included in the $75,000 price up to $25,000. This would be a difference of $6,000, making the contract $81,000 total instead of $75,000. This is a simplified example and the homeowner should also be aware that the increased cabinet cost may also affect the installation cost of the contract.
